It had been nearly four years since my last visit to the GLO, so a trip to Mombassa was more than just a little overdue. I was desperate to see how much all the Children had grown and to meet lots of new arrivals. I also really wanted to see the school for myself, as I had heard such fantastic things about it. So I was very excited when I boarded my flight at Heathrow. I was a little apprehensive too if I’m honest, as this was the first time I had travelled out to Mombasa on my own. I have to say that all of those apprehensions were completely dispelled and I would not hesitate to fly to Mombasa alone again.

I have to say that all of those apprehensions were completely dispelled and I would not hesitate to fly to Mombasa alone again. I flew with Ethiopian airlines who were incredibly friendly and helpful. My transfer at Addis Ababba was easy and the airport felt very safe and hospitable. I was there into the wee small hours of the morning on my return and enjoyably whilled away a few hours in the buzzing little airport bar chatting to other volunteers and travellers about their experiences in Africa.

My visit was short but sweet, I could only spend a week at the GLO but it was, as always a brilliant and fulfilling experience.

It was tangible how much the GLO had developed, grown and changed in the four years since my last visit. I felt the confidence of the staff has gone from strength to strength. It was also clear that the Children are benefiting hugely from having an onsite social worker (Hemed) and counsellor (Lucy) and the fantastic work they do.

I could spend many, many paragraphs going into detail about each child and all their brilliant traits and quirks (and please do contact me through Mary if you would like me to bend your ear further, as I will happily do so!).

But I have to say I was particularly touched and inspired by Lawrence this visit. He is such an incredible character, so funny and very determined in the face of such adversity. It really is very humbling to spend time with a young man who is constantly smiling and joking, never complaining or down.

I definitely will not be leaving it so long before I return again. See you next year GLO!
